You, like most others, probably rely on your phone to play, socialize, work, and connect. Because we do rely on our phones so heavily, it can come as quite a shocker when the screen goes black and will not turn back on.
Fortunately, a black screen does not always mean that there is something seriously wrong with the phone and it could just be a hiccup. There are several ways you can try to remedy the situation from home and get your phone back to working correctly.
Below, we will discuss some of the steps you can try to overcome the black screen on your smartphone.
Hard Reset Your Phone First
One of the first and easiest things you can try to do to fix a black screen is to perform a hard reset. A hard reset is NOT a factory reset, so you will not lose the data on your phone. A hard reset simply reboots the phone and allows it to basically get a quick refresh.
To perform a hard reset on an Android device, do the following:
-
Press and hold down both the home and power buttons at the same time for a total of 10 seconds
-
Release both buttons simultaneously once the phone restarts itself
To perform a hard reset on an iPhone version 8 and newer, do the following:
-
Press down on the volume up button and then release it
-
Press down on the volume down button and then release it
-
Press down and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen and then release
Clean Out the Charging Port
While you may think that your phone was charged before the screen went black, it is possible that it did not charge at all, which would explain why it is not turning on when you press the power button.
Charging ports become blocked due to a buildup of dirt and debris and this causes issues with the connection between the charging port itself and the charger.
Try to clean out your charging port using a can of air, a toothpick, or a cotton swab. Once cleaned out, attempt to charge your phone again.
Update Your Apps or Delete Problematic Ones
Do you have any apps on your phone that seem to be constantly crashing or causing issues on your phone? If so, delete them and see if this corrects the issue.
You should also check for any app updates and complete them ASAP should there be any that need to be updated.
Of course, this fix will only work if you can, at some point, get your phone to turn on. If you cannot, then it is unlikely that you can attempt to do this.
Factory Reset Your Phone
Of course, this is going to be one of the last methods you want to try as it will erase the data from your phone. In many cases, a factory reset will fix the problem, especially if it is an error with your operating system.
To perform a factory reset on an Android device, do the following:
-
Take some time to backup the data on your device to Google Drive or your computer
-
Open up the settings menu
-
Click the following, in this order: system, advanced, reset options
-
Choose the option that says erase all data
-
Click to reset the device and confirm your choice
-
Allow the phone to complete the reset process
To perform a factory reset on an iPhone device, do the following:
-
Take some time to backup the data on your phone to your iCloud account
-
Open up the settings menu on your phone
-
Tap general
-
Click the reset button that appears at the bottom of the page
-
Press erase all content and settings
-
Confirm your options and allow the device to complete the process
